The Church of Christ. Christ's Church began on Pentecost Sunday, A.D. 30, with about 3000 believers being baptized and added to the church (Acts 2). From that beginning the church spread, as Jesus predicted, from Jerusalem to the Judean countryside, to the neighboring country Samaria, and then throughout the world. Local congregations were planted in each city and community. Down through the centuries the Church of Christ has spread and grown through establishing local congregations wherever a group of people could be converted to Christ.
Today, the Churches of Christ and Christian Churches are a movement to restore the church to the teachings of the Lord Jesus, as found in the New Testament. Cutting through the centuries of human traditions that have built up in Christendom, the Church of Christ goes back to the divine pattern “delivered once for all time” in the Bible (Jude 3). Christian Churches do not claim to be the only Christians, but simply desire to be Christians only. The plea is to unite all Christians under the Lordship of Christ and the authority of His Word.
